When you go out to dinner you think of a few simple things such as having a nice steak dinner, a few drinks, and having a good time. To a server though we have different views of what is supposed to happen, and how people should act when they go out to a restaurant. The first and last thing we hate is rude people. Rude people who don't know how to talk to a server; they are unwilling to wait, they have no patience what so ever, and if that wasn’t bad enough they leave a lousy tip.
We as human beings look down on the people that serve us, but that isn't the way that servers should be treated at all. I myself have had many people treat me horrible, because I was the "server". I guarantee you that I have more class and understanding than most people who treat a server with disrespect. Rude people make anyone’s job even harder. It is not just the fact that you have to deal with them, but that we can't kick you out of a place for being a horrible human being. Only the managers can. When will this rule change? I wish I could tell some of my tables to stop being so selfish and look at someone else to see that they really don't have it that hard. I wish they would realize their actions aren't helping the person or them-self what so ever.
People who don't know how to properly talk to a server are extremely annoying. Servers and people in the service industry are not low class citizens at all. I tell my boss this all the time, “I like people who are like me.” For when I go out I like to drink to have fun and at the end of night tip well, because I had a good time. I don't care about the kitchen time if my food comes out late due to a rush of orders. I care about the people who I am with. People need to learn that you go out to have a good time, and don't you think the server should have the same common courtesy? I say yes. I admit it is due to the fact I work in the food service industry. We solely rely on are guest to tip well and treat us good. In the end it’s kind of sad with all that joy going on by eating out we still have rude people who seem determined to tip bad based on their lousy mood, and lack of social skills.
Tipping bad on top of being rude is like a slap in the face to a server, it shows a complete lack of humanity for other human beings. For a server like me it is the last straw. I will do all I can to avoid serving someone who treated me or one of coworkers badly. We mustn't allow people who are rude and cheap in to a restaurant to ruin the dining experience. We should catour to the people who pay it forward, treat people with respect, and tip well for good service. Tipping is part of the bill, and to add bad manners with a lousy tip equals one mad server determined to avoid you at all costs. If you are a regular don’t let this become your reputation or you will receive service that is as bad as your tip and manners.
One good thing about becoming a server is I have learned to have more patience than people who have never worked in the food service industry. Nothing bugs me when I go out to dinner or lunch or on a date at all. Food comes out when it’s done, doesn't matter if its ten minutes or an hour its all the same to me. It is not like I went out for fast food. My parents brought me up right and taught me how to act when you go out to dinner. It does not matter if it’s a five star restaurant or a bar. The rules are the same, why should it matter what place your at when rude is rude no matter where you are.
I wish things were different, but I ask those of you who read this blog to please be a good person, know how to tip, and definitely don’t' be rude. Not just to the people who are servers, but to all people who work based on tips for the service they provide. Oprah isn't always right about everything, and I thank you for reading this to get the servers perspective.
